PLAYGROUND / BALLPARK

The City of Marks donated eight and a half acres of land for a playground and a ballpark.  The Marks Project has raised the funds and completed the building of a new playground.

Fundraising efforts are continuing for a community pavilion, basketball courts, and bathrooms to complete the ballpark.

MARKS YOUTH OUTREACH

With the help of the Marks Project, the Freeze Foundation has donated a grant to the Marks Youth Outreach for the purchase of new football jerseys.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Currently there is not a single manufacturing job in Quitman County.  We are initiating a job readiness program to identify the potential workforce.  The Division of Workforce Development and Community Services at Northwest Community College will begin workforce assessments in Quitman County.  They will follow up with basic skills and pre-employment training, which will ensure a qualified workforce for the future of economic development.

Bunge Property

The City of Marks has obtained the former Bunge Corporation property, approximately fifty acres adjacent to the railroad. The property includes an administration building and shop facilities.  We are assessing the property and working with the Mississippi Governor’s Office and state and local officials to identify potential economic development opportunities.

Currently the Quitman County Hospital is closed.  We are assisting local officials and exploring options for reopening it.

FUNDRAISING

Our fundraising efforts look to private sources, either individual or corporate; public grant solicitation; and strategic partnerships like the National Civil Rights Museum, the McLean Institute at the University of Mississippi, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
